Barryville
Barryville, New York is a hamlet located in Highland, Sullivan County. Previously known as “The River” Barryville was renamed for their postmaster general, William T. Barry, in 1853. Barryville saw the only major Revolutionary War battle in the Upper Delaware, this was on the plateau above Minisink Ford. On one side was the colonial militia of Goshen, who suffered a devastating defeat against a group of Native Americans and Tories who were under the command of Mohawk Chieftain Joseph Brant.
Much like many small towns in the area of Sullivan and Orange County, Barryville saw a tremendous amount of growth with the opening of the D&H Canal. After the construction of the D&H Canal a blacksmith, a gristmill, and a broom handle factory were established. Many of the town residents today are descendants of earlier settlers, still carrying on the boom of the town!
