Florida is a village in Orange County, New York that was settled in 1760 by Anglo-Europeans. Before this, the area had been home to Indigenous people for thousands of years. Over the course of time, this village has been the home of a few famous people including William Henry Seward, a NY State Governor and the Secretary of State under the Lincoln and Johnson administrations. He is most famously known for buying “Seward’s Folly”, now known as Alaska. Another famous person from this area is Jimmy Sturr, the “Polka King”, whose albums have won him 18 Grammy Awards.
Other than famous people, Florida is also home to a ton of thriving onion farms. The reason behind this is the large amount of black dirt that is in this area. Unlike regular dirt, black dirt is extremely rich in minerals which are perfect for growing this crop. Nowadays this village makes up 1.9 square miles of the 839 square miles in Orange County and has a population of around 2,857.
