The Erie Railroad chose Chester to be one of its stops. Chester’s dairy products soon traveled across New York.
Phil Gregory, a local farmer, prospered greatly because of this. He was able to provide New York City with 240 quarts of milk a day. Which earned the railroad $1.20 in freight charges. Today, this town makes up 25.20 square miles (2.1 of which is the village) of the 839 square miles of Orange County and has a population of around 11,944 (3,957 live in the village).
