Highland Lakes

Highland Lakes is a lakeside area of Sussex County, best known for the Highland Lakes Country Club. The area is generally a very relaxing retreat from most everyday concerns, but recently the area’s had a significant mosquito problem. Mosquitoes are known to carry West Nile virus, Eastern Equine encephalitis, Jamestown Canyon virus , La Crosse encephalitis virus, St. Louis encephalitis, Zika virus, Chikungunya, Dengue, Yellow Fever, and even Malaria. They lay eggs in stagnant water, and each female mosquito produces around 300 eggs.

Most of the mosquito-related diseases are particularly dangerous to senior citizens and children. Highland Lakes has a population where 43.3% is over the age of 45, and 33.2% of households have children under the age of 18. (information from the 2010 census) With these numbers in mind, the threat of mosquitos to the Highland Lakes population in particular, becomes concerning.

Dealing with Mosquitoes in Highland Lakes

Sussex County currently involves Highland Lakes in a program to control mosquito populations. The Office of Mosquito Control was established by the county to take measures, such as, but not limited to, spreading mosquito larvacide in non-residential areas by plane. These measures will hopefully control future mosquito populations that threaten the area.

However, until the results of Sussex County’s efforts pay off, there’s a need to control mosquito populations near individual homes. Currently, there are programs such as a campaign to report neglected pools in the area to reduce stagnant water for mosquitoes to breed in, but to combat existing mosquito problems around your home, you’re going to need professional help from outside the county officials.
