Highland

Highland is a large town in Sullivan County made up of 5 hamlets.

While its combined 5 hamlets may cover a lot of area, the population for Highland, as a whole, is 2,495 people, which totals out to 50 people per square mile. Barryville

Barryville is a quiet, wooded space filled with inns, bars, and historical sites to visit. It’s very quiet most of the year, and many of the inhabitants have homes for summer use, or commute to the New York City for work, creating a very small human presence here.

Eldred

Eldred is home to the town hall of Highland as well as Highland’s local school district, Eldred Central School District.

Highland Lake

Highland Lake’s name is no mystery. It’s a hamlet on the lake, Highland Lake. The beach for this lake is just across from the Highland Lake Fire Department, and is a popular place to visit in the summertime.

Minisink Ford

Minisink Ford is the location of the “Battle of Minisink” where 40-50 soldiers were killed in the American Revolution by Loyalists and the Iroquois. The battlefield is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yulan

Yulan is a quiet hamlet where many of the families have roots in the area from well before the signing of the constitution.

While the absence of other people creates a quiet atmosphere for relaxation, the low human presence in the area also invites a large pest presence. Without fear of human contact, pests such as raccoons, rodents, and insects that avoid humans will often enter homes and backyards in the area. In addition to pests, other wildlife, including deer, will populate the nearby woods, attracting ticks and fleas that intend to feed on them.

If you live in the area of Highland, it’s a good idea to announce your presence to the surrounding wildlife and make your home unattractive to potential pests. Never leave food scraps easily accessible to wildlife, and be sure to maintain your lawn by cutting the grass regularly and raking leaves. If these measures fail to prevent a pest infestation, or you’d like help with additional pest prevention measures, be sure to call the Masters, at Masters Pest Control.

Trouble with Bees & Wasps in your area?

A bee or wasp problem in or your home or yard can disrupt daily life and put both you and your family in danger. If a family member is allergic to a bee and is stung, the reaction might be serious enough to warrant a trip to the hospital.
