Bed Bugs

They are most likely to appear in urban areas, however, they still find their way into rural areas as well. From cabins in Shohola to apartments in Middletown, these pests seem to be everywhere.

What are Bed Bugs?

They are reddish-brown parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood. As the name implies, they normally nest in the beds of their host. However, they can live anywhere in an infested house, from beds to laundry baskets. These pests have six stages of development to adulthood. These stages are called “instars” with the first instar being about the size of a pinhead. As well as the first instar, the eggs for bed bugs are also incredibly small. Even though bed bugs do not carry diseases they are known to have negative health side effects.

How Do You Get Them?

Bed bugs aren’t the most nimble, or even fast for the matter, but they’re great hitchhikers. They know where to hide to get from house to house. Here are just a few places they can be when hitching a ride:

  • Suitcases
  • Luggage
  • In your clothes
  • Books
  • Binders
  • Stuffed Animals
  • Book bags

They are masters at hiding

One of the reasons why they are so difficult to do a DIY extermination is their ability to hide. If you have an infestation you may already know this. When they’re in your house they can be in your beds, your walls, dressers, nightstands, headboards, and your clothes for example. It’s not until you are resting quietly, typically at night until they come out.

Other places that they could be hiding are:

  • Couches
  • Curtains
  • Laundry baskets
  • Televisions
  • Pet bedding
  • Screw heads in furniture
  • Under sheathing in a box spring
  • Furniture seams

Negative Health Impacts

Since they consume your blood they’re already bad for your health, but there’s more. Many people say they get intense itching lasting several days after the bite. Furthermore, the itching will lead to scratching, which may have the adverse effect of an infection. There are also psychological problems as well, with people developing anxiety and insomnia when dealing with these pests.

Identifying a bed bug infestation

Because it’s so difficult to spot them sometimes you don’t even know you’re infested. The first sign that people usually notice are the bug bites. These pests are infamously a parasite, your blood being their food source. If you notice that you have bites all over your body you might have an infestation. The most commonly affected areas are the arms, legs, face, shoulders, face, and hands. When bitten you may notice itching and blotchy red skin, followed by a series of bite marks. If you have these I’d advise checking your bedding and walls for any indication of these pests. Common signs are holes, bloodspots, husks, and of course the bed bug itself.
