Glenwood

Glenwood is a quiet unincorporated area along the Appalachian Trail. It’s part of Sussex County but lacks a smaller governing body. Being on the Appalachian Trail, Glenwood is known for some of the local pests that traveling hikers encounter. Hikers commonly complain about the numbers of mosquitos, ticks, and spiders in the woods here.

Pests in Glenwood

To hikers, these pests are a passing annoyance, but if you live in the area, these pests are all practically living in your backyard. Hikers often complain of black clouds of mosquitoes that start in the New Jersey/Pennsylvania section of the trail in particular. They may be very common in your neck of the woods, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay!

To prevent spiders and ticks from taking up residence on your property, it’s important to pick up leaves and debris from your yard that would otherwise supply them shelter, as well as other general lawn care, such as frequently mowing the lawn to prevent tall grass. This prevents pests from having a place to live on your property and forces them to take up residence elsewhere.

Mosquitoes, on the other hand, require pools of stagnant water for breeding. The best way to prevent mosquitoes is to prevent stagnant water, wherever it might be. It sounds simple, but it’s often difficult to locate all of the possible breeding areas around your home, especially on larger plots of land. Common places for stagnant water are:

  • Open trash cans
  • Gutters
  • Tarps
  • Buckets
  • Bird baths
  • Pools
  • Kids toys
  • Planters and pots

If removing stagnant water isn’t an option, it may be possible to treat it so that it becomes uninhabitable to mosquitoes, such as the case of chlorinating a pool.
